Knowledge vs. Competence-based Training

Knowledge is generally acquired through formal training. But this acquired knowledge may not inevitably result to a direct improvement of one’s performance. It may happen in a highly technical maintenance training course that the participant is gaining a vast knowledge, but struggles afterwards to apply this knowledge effectively in his job. In this case, the real learning process starts only after the course, when the engineer is back in his real working environment. Therefore, the challenge that we are facing in our training environment is how to create an operation-focused and practice-oriented competence within the regular training course.

The most logical way is to have exposure to the real aircraft throughout the course. However, several things must be considered such as restricted access to the aircraft, short ground time, difficulty to expose the whole training group at the same time and the risk of injury and aircraft damage as well.

For these reasons, the most practical way is to bring the aircraft virtually into the classroom. LTTP offers state-of-the-art training media comprising of mock-up trainers, computer-based-training, and electronic simulation systems, e.g. MTD (maintenance simulators) or virtual aircraft for component location training. These various training media promote active learning which allows our students to practice extensively most of the operational work packages in a controlled and safer environment of a training centre.

The key for an efficient training is the blending of different training methods and its integration into an aligned syllabus. This combination of theory and practice along with an active participation of the trainee throughout the course creates a more efficient training thus producing a competent staff rather than just knowledgeable personnel.

Description of Blended Training
 
The stimulation of various senses allows for optimum knowledge retention and true creation of competence. Thus LTTP blends training media for efficient and effective technical training. Blended Training consists of:
Traditional Instructor “chalk and talk”
Computer-based Training (CBT) or Web-based Training (WBT)
Simulations (mock-ups up to full flight simulators)
Hands–on demonstration & practice (structured Practical Training or On-The-Job Training (OJT))
Courseware media (printed and digital media)
 
A typical training day at LTTP
 
In the morning…
…traditional classroom with Instructor-led sessions
Safety precautions, system highlights, transfer of experience, ....
supported by CBT – or Simulator demonstrations
 
In the afternoon...
…student-paced CBT and/or Simulator sessions
system review and description of new systems
hands-on time (switching, location, visual & aural warnings)
